Santa Maria College
History and tradition to today. When GFE was commissioned to design the new Learning Centre Garden for Santa Maria College the dilemma was how to reflect the great history of the Sisters of Mercy and commemorate their tireless work and efforts in establishing the traditions and foundations of the College.
GFE worked closely in conjunction with architects Edgar Idle Wade who had designed the modern curved new Learning Centre and Hall in contrast to the original Spanish mission style building. The blending of the old and new buildings worked superbly and the pressure was on to create a functional garden worthy of its place in the landscape.
The steeply elevated site made movement between the buildings difficult so innovative multi level steps and an amphitheatre were constructed to facilitate easy access and multi-usage of the site. Existing drainage and electrical constraints required careful consideration to minimise costs and disruption to existing facilities. Distinct landscaped areas cater for community events, classroom activities, sporting events and student reflection. This unusual landscape is a visual delight particularly when viewed from the top floor of the Learning Centre.
